C-RS Connection

July 2020

Dear Friends,

I hope you are enjoying these warm and sunny summer days. I would like to talk to you about volunteering and its benefits in hopes that you will consider volunteering your time to the C-RS. As we continue to move our technology further into the 21st century, we need your assistance.

We especially need the help of an:

  • Audiovisual Supervisor – to oversee the security and usage of C-RS equipment, assesses the quality of images and live-streaming, and act as the primary individual for filming within the Cultural Center (must be local).
  • Virtual Curator – to oversee the quality of scanning and uploads to the website, assure proper organization and indexing of the C-RS collection of cultural material and media, including The New Rusyn Times, videos, photos, genealogy, and so forth.

Volunteering is a rewarding experience and brings fun and fulfillment to our lives. It is an easy way to explore your interests and passions.

Many studies have demonstrated the link between helping others and personal happiness. Researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness in a large group of American adults. According to a study in Social Science and Medicine, they found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. Compared with people who never volunteered, the odds of being “very happy” rose 7% among those who volunteer monthly and 12% for people who volunteer every two to four weeks.

Please consider volunteering your efforts to the C-RS. We need your input and your ideas! Please email me at or call me at 412-251-3083.

Take care,

Maryann Sivak, C-RS National President

Members of the The Anna Donson Memorial Scholarship committee as well as the C-RS Board of Directors are most grateful to Sasha Sanderson for her generous donation to the scholarship fund. We heartily extend our appreciation for her thoughtfulness.

Sasha's donation is an investment in the future of an outstanding student enrolled in a higher education program. The scholarship wishes to encourage and highlight the excellent contributions that our Rusyn people are making to their communities and beyond. We hope for the scholarship to accelerate the advancement of our young Carpatho-Rusyn population while expanding the development of our Carpatho-Rusyn citizens, within their communities and states through high education.

Sasha, thank you so very much!

The C-RS Educational Media Committee announces “A Carpatho-Rusyn Midsummer Festival” an informative video presented by Dean Poloka, host of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society Heritage Program.

A highlight of the summer season was the summer solstice festival. This celebration called Ivanden, Sobitka, or Kupalo has its roots in ancient Slavic pagan tradition. With the introduction of Christianity by Sts. Cyril and Methodius in the ninth century, pagan rituals were transformed into celebrations centered around St. John’s Day celebrating the Feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist.

Learn more about these celebrations still observed today in Carpatho-Rusyn villages. Click on: A CARPATHO RUSYN MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL

Just a reminder to all chapter/branch leaders that a new feature is now available on the C-RS website. Upcoming event announcements can now be submitted online using the newly implemented "Event Announcement Submission Form". This form is restricted to chapter/branch leaders and board members only. To access this feature, go to the "Our Events" option on the C-RS website and select "Event Submission Form" from the drop-down menu.

Fill out the form with the event information and click the "Submit" button. The event form will automatically be sent to email address for review and approval. Once approved appropriate action will be taken to post the event on the C-RS website's event page and Facebook or any other media as necessary.

The Who are the Rusyns? DVD was released in 2019 for the 25th Anniversary of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society.

It is professionally presented by John Righetti explaining the complicated history of the Rusyn people. This “hard copy” should be in every Rusyn home simply because it will be referred to often and hopefully shared with others. One realizes how close the Rusyns were to becoming extinct and gives great hope for the future as we are now recognized as an ethnic minority by many countries.

The DVD can be purchased for $25, which includes postage and handling. Please include the name and address of the recipient and mail your check made payable to Carpatho-Rusyn Society to Bonnie Burke, 1101 Tanner Crossing Lane, Indian Land, SC 29707.

Orders will be processed immediately upon receipt.

The Youngstown Chapter has canceled all our summer events.  These include the Simply Slavic festival held in downtown Youngstown, Festival of Arts held on the campus of Youngstown State University, and our annual Vatra. These actions are being taken because of the Virus. We are sorry to have to cancel but members health is more important. As of this writing over 110,000 deaths have occurred in this country.

Being Rusyn doesn't make us immune. Hopefully we can schedule some events in the fall. We miss everyone and will keep you posted on future events!

Tour Croatian Museum - Lunch at Dubrovnik Garden Restaurant

34900 Lakeshore Blvd
Eastlake, OH 44095

  • Tour museum from 11-12 pm
  • Lunch to follow

This event is designed to be a social outing that you may find of interest visually and gastronomically. Many of the items found in the museum would have been in our ancestors' homes. It will also give us an opportunity to learn about their ethnic neighbors. Take a step back in time and also meet other Carpatho-Rusyn Society members.
